Friday July 17 was a busy day at the Shasta Association of Realtors. The morning was filled with New Agent Oientation. Mandatory training for new agents in our association, these folks experienced an information packed morning about how we conduct business. The meeting was organized by Freddie Martin, and attendees benefited from information presented by Val Harvey, Mary Spence, Scott Swendiman, Fred Quigley, Sandy Mays, Greg Lloyd, Wayne Martin and yours truly, Skip Murphy.

Here are a few of your newer colleagues. We tried to offset the very serious risk management guidelines and fair housing rules, with a light-hearted look at agent courtesy. There was nothing light about the heavy emphasis on ethics in practice though, and that brings us to the next half of the day.

In the afternoon the board facility was filled with agents from our association, and also nearby associations, for a  training session on Professional Standards presented by real estate attorney Dave Tanner. Dave went over new changes to the MLS rules in detail, and offered a more state-wide perspective on the complicated business of real estate. He also went over the main points that members need to know when serving on the Grievance Committee or the Pro Standards Committee. Dave Tanner, DRE# 679694, is Risk Reduction Manager for RE/MAX Gold, the largest independent real estate company in Northern California and the fourth largest RE/MAX franchise in the world. Dave has been a real estate broker for over 30 years and an attorney for over 27 years, emphasizing the counselling of clients in real estate transactions. He was selected as the Realtor of the Year for the Sacramento Association of REALTORS(R) for 2001 and for the Sacramento Womens Council of REALTORS(R) for 2006. Dave serves on the Board of Directors and on the Professional Standards (Ethics) Committees of the Sacramento, California and National Associations of REALTORS(R).

Dave is a thoughtful and eloquent speaker. Attendance at these annual symposiums is mandatory to serve on either the Grievance Committee, or the Pro Standards panel. I know everyone there learned some new facts or rules, but even more important sometimes is to hear well argued reasoning as structured by a keen legal mind. The group of REALTORS(R) assembled here serve at their own expense on committees that seek to enforce our Code of Ethics, and to offer redress to members of the public who may feel as though they were mistreated in a property transaction. This duty to the public and to our peers is an extremely important facet of being a REALTOR(R). This was an informative and instructive presentation, and I am proud that so many of our colleagues feel equally strongly that it was important to attend, and that carrying forward on this aspect of the REALTOR(R) mission is vital to all. Skip Murphy.
