Today's General MLS Membership meeting was hosted by Ron Largent. Our mortgage minutes were provided by the always informed Esther Guerrero Auerbach of Mission Hills Mortgage.
A new online business was introduced. The Shasta Trading Post offers free classified ads, and additional advertising opportunities. Shown above, Terry Barnes introduced their program. Their mission is to "Keep Shasta County Money in Shasta County" and their motto is "Buy, Shop, Dine, Stay, Local." You can check it out at:

Our featured guest was Silas Lyons, Editor of the Redding Record Searchlight newspaper, and Redding.com.
Silas introduced the new column that's running in the Saturday Home and Garden section where local real estate professionals answer local questions. The writing opportunity is open to all REALTORS. Each week a question is posed and answered by several local real estate professionals. The feature is similar to the Voices of Faith section that has been so well received by the community.
"I'd like to make a fresh start with you."
He also spoke about challenges facing the newspaper in the age of the internet, and acknowleged the sometimes rocky relationship the paper has recently had with the real estate professional community.
Silas turns out to be a very likable fellow. When you
think about the challenges faced by his organization (click on the link to
ShstaTradingPost.com above to see just the latest one) you can’t help but to be
sympathetic to his dilemma. There are very few barriers to entry for websites
challenging the local newspaper for eyeballs. Yet, what is a community without
a newspaper of record? Craigslist and others often take, but do not give back.
Our local paper serves more of a need than just classified ads, but the lack of
that revenue is forcing them to adapt to a new, as yet undefined business
model. It was an interesting and thought provoking half hour. We recorded the
talk as a Podcast, which you can find as Podcast #12 at
the Podcast page. It was another informative program from your Association, As
always, if you enjoy this post and Podcast, please leave a comment, or contact
